Sacred labor

Janabai’s poetry does not emerge from palaces or monasteries, but from the exhausting rhythms of domestic labor. In her verses, God helps sweep the floor, pound grain, wash utensils, and carry water, collapsing the distance between the divine and the ordinary.

Born into a poor Shudra family and entering domestic service in the saint Namdev's household, Janabai transformed everyday work into a sacred arena. For her, devotion was not withdrawal from the world but the sanctification of survival.
