Saints · Purandaradasa
ಪುರಂದರದಾಸ
Born as Srinivasa Nayaka, he was a wealthy merchant who renounced everything to become Purandaradasa. He is revered for systematizing the foundational exercises of Carnatic music, creating a pedagogical system that remains central to training even today.
His songs, composed in Kannada, addressed ethics, hypocrisy, and social inequality. For Purandaradasa, music was never merely technical; it was a vehicle for democratization and a form of prayer that emphasized sincerity over ritual status.
