Verses  ·  Kabir  ·  Doha ii

बुरा जो देखन मैं चला, बुरा न मिलिया कोय।
जो दिल खोजा आपना, मुझसे बुरा न कोय॥

Bura jo dekhan main chala, bura na miliya koy.
Jo dil khoja aapna, mujhse bura na koy.

I went searching for evil in others, but found none.
When I searched my own heart, I found no one worse than myself.

Translator’s note

on the language of the verse

Kabir turns moral judgment inward. The verse attacks hypocrisy and self-righteousness more than “evil” itself. The hardest examination is self-examination.
