A bridge of compassion

Living in sixteenth-century Maharashtra, Eknath knew Sanskrit traditions intimately yet chose to write extensively in Marathi, bringing profound philosophical ideas to ordinary people. He believed spiritual understanding should not be guarded by elite circles but should circulate widely.

Eknath challenged caste prejudice through direct action and compassion. Several stories portray him interacting with marginalized communities, choosing ethical reform and inner transformation over outward performance. His poetry reveals a deep understanding of human psychology, exposing pride and vanity with clarity.
