A sanctuary of song

Born as Kancherla Gopanna, Ramadasu was a tax official who diverted state revenues to renovate the neglected Rama temple at Bhadrachalam. This act of 'borrowed power' led to his arrest and long imprisonment under the Qutb Shahi sultans.

His years in prison became the emotional center of his legacy. Cut off from comfort, he turned to music, composing kirtanas filled with longing, despair, and ecstatic surrender. His prison became a sanctuary of song, and his music remains central to the Carnatic tradition today.
